The biggest film festival in the world recently released its official poster image for their 69th celebration of international film in 2016. Since its premiere in 1932, the Cannes Film Festival has grown to become the most prestigeous film festival in the world. Held every year in Cannes France, it’s a place of film artistry and commercialism. It’s a place where independent filmmakers are given a world stage to present their work and it’s also a haven for movie stars and high powered producers to finance, sell, and buy film projects. The festival’s highest award, The Palme d’ Or ( Golden Palm ), is given every year for excellence in film and performance. Along with releasing the poster image, which is influenced by French director Jean-Luc Godard’s film Contempt, an official statement was released by the festival’s general delegate Thierry Fremaux;
It’s all there. The steps, the sea, the horizon: a man’s ascent towards his dream, in a warm Mediterranean light that turns to gold. As an image it is reminiscent of a timeless quote used at the beginning of Contempt: “Cinema replaces our gaze with a world in harmony with our desires”.
The 69th Cannes Film Festival runs from May 11-22.
