From prolific indie film studio A24 comes a dark dramatic horror called The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the film tells the story of a master surgeon driven to madness by the actions of a teenage boy and his dysfunctional family. Lanthimos is an imaginative indie film director and has given us cinematic gems like Dogtooth and The Lobster. The mysterious poster of the film shows the surgeon, played by Colin Farrell, standing somewhat menacingly in front of two empty hospital beds. The poster seems to suggest that something dangerous has just happened.
The creative partnership between Lanthimos and A24 is the perfect marriage. A24 has given us offbeat and eclectic indie films that have pleased critics and the arthouse film audience. They’ve given us films like Ex Machina, The Witch, Lanthimos’s The Lobster, and of course the Academy Award winning drama Moonlight. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is yet another work of cinematic art to add to the list.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer premiered at this years Cannes Film Festival and stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Alicia Silverstone. It’s expected in theaters later this year.
